Peringuey’s Adder (Bitis peringueyi)

These snakes described as common and inhabits undisturbed deserts. A small snake with an average total length of 20–25 cm, its maximum recorded total length is 32 cm. The head is short and flat with eyes located on top of the head. The head is covered with strongly keeled scales. Well known for its ability to sidewind, which is the only effective way to negotiate the soft unstable dune sand. Often when buried in loose sand, very little of the snake is left exposed. These snakes may lay still motionless waiting for potential prey amongst the dollar bushes in the desert – they often give themselves away by violently hissing when in close proximity.
